This post is meant to summarise the projects I’m working on at the moment. Each item includes a brief overview.
Syber is the name I’ve given to my fantasy transport network for Sydney. It’s also the brand I would use to unite under one umbrella Sydney’s public transport modes. Syber stands for Sydney Basin Express Rail, but really, I like that it combines a digital nuance with an identity unique to Sydney. It’s forward thinking and catchy, and would become colloquial to Sydney. It also of course unscores Sydney’s strengths in digital industries, and is evocative of connectedness and technology – positive things to associate a city with, especially with something as prevalent as the naming of its transport system. Syber is centred on strengthening, extending, and re-configuring Sydney’s existing transport network with a mix of achievable and pragmatic changes, combined with some more ambitious proposals. It also ties into Plan Sydney.
Plan Sydney is the name of Sydneyworks’s proposals for Sydney. These are mainly focused on broadscale structural changes to the city and are not realistically possible in the existing political environment. Nonetheless, I will explain through Plan Sydney why my proposals would be beneficial, and possible achievable. The main thrust of the proposed changes are as follows:
Relocation and Replacement of Sydney Airport Creating a central spine from Circular Quay to the end of the existing Main Runway. Sydney’s main airport would be located at Badgerys Creek, connected into Sydney’s main centres through two fast rail links. A secondary airport would be located at Kurnell.
A new city to the west of the M7 to be known as Eoraland. This would reinforce the polarisation of Sydney’s metropolitan area and form a new counter-balancing focal point for Sydney. There would be ‘Global Sydney’ in the East, and Eoraland in the West, with Parramatta-Olympic Park in the metro’s geographically centre position.
Plan Sydney’s structural changes to Sydney’s metropolitan fabric are supported and enabled by SYBER.
To understand the changes coming to Sydney, and why my proposals would be comprehensive and better, I am building a demographic spreadsheet of Sydney to understand the demographic forces at play and how these can be accommodated.

CBD Model and New, Loosened Planning Rules and Heights and Solar Access Planes
I’m creating a model of the Sydney CBD and using it to redraw its onerous and overly restrictive planning rules. These mainly concern FSR constraints, height limits over the western half of the CBD, and deleting some pointless Solar Access Planes. Examples of unneccasary and logically befuddling Solar Access Planes include the ones regarding Chifley Square and the forecourt of the Governor Phillip Tower. Craziness. More on that later and its implications for lost opportunity.
Renewed Governance through the Sydney Borough System
I propose a system of 14 Boroughs (or ‘Burrows’ to really get over that patchwork quilt special cultural quality and identity warm) to govern Sydney. They would work in partnership with the State Government and some sort of Sydney Metropolitan Council. Of course, the new Sydney Metropolitan Commission sort of has some of that Metropolitan Council scope. More on all of that later.

These are currently the big projects in the works. I will update this post, or add another, if I remember another big project that I have included here.
I hope this describes the thrust of Sydneyworks’s projects at the moment.
