2 years ago by sydneyworkz Cooking up my latest system map for #SydneyAt8Million . A few niggles and line decisions to be made. I focus on capacity and reliability coupled to city-making opportunities. I don’t prioritise expansion of coverage. I prioritise expansion of capacity, reliability and frequency. Sydney’s network hasn’t had a significant expansion in capacity since the Eastern Suburbs tunnel opened in the 1970s - everything else has been fundamentally an expansion in *coverage*, not *capacity*. All those coverage expansions run into the same bottleneck at the city where there are only 4 track pathways available. That’s the problem with the Metro - we finally…
2 years ago by sydneyworkz Seattle is using transport as a tool to address disadvantage in their city. They acknowledge that transport - being able to reach employment, education, amenity and enjoyment - is a key to opportunity. My Crossrail plan, as well as giving Sydney’s Three Cities a backbone connection to each other, acknowledges this by example rerouting the South Line into its network giving one of Sydney’s relatively disadvantaged areas a fast and frequent connector to the drivers of the region’s economy. Most of Sydney’s current enormous infrastructure projects reinforce patterns of (dis)advantage and opportunity. #Crossrail4Sydney

2 years ago by sydneyworkz Sydney’s double decker trains are some of the most comfortable urban trains I’ve been on. Criticised by consultants, they are utterly comfortable and surprisingly brilliant. I’ll give a more reasoned look at them later. #indefenceofsydneysdoubledeckertrainfleet

Yes, the shops at Ashfield predate the new apartments and they are a good precedent to replicate, but when you’re outside the shops, under their awnings, what apartments? I’ll say it again - details matter - especially the ground plane. #detailsmatter #groundplane4humans
